Cancun, Riviera Maya, or Cabo? Picking Your Mexico Beach Week
Mexico owns the family all inclusive market for a reason: flight times, price, and a resort industry that takes kids seriously. But the two coasts are different trips, and picking on price alone puts families on the wrong one regularly.
The Caribbean side: Cancun and the Riviera Maya
This is the default, and deservedly. Caribbean blue water, the country’s deepest all inclusive inventory from budget to absurd, and the best excursion menu in family travel: Mayan ruins, cenotes (swimmable freshwater caves that kids describe as the best part of the trip), and eco parks like the Xcaret family built for exactly your crew.
Choose Cancun’s hotel zone for shortest transfers and lowest cost, and the Riviera Maya stretch south of it for quieter resorts on bigger grounds. Know two regional quirks: seasonal sargassum seaweed can hit these beaches (resorts rake daily, but check recent reports for your dates), and the east coast flight math is excellent, often under 4 hours from the Northeast.
The Pacific side: Los Cabos
Cabo is the west coast’s answer: desert mountains meeting a dramatic sea, reliable sun, and a shorter flight for the entire western half of the country. The family critical caveat: much of Cabo’s ocean is not swimmable due to currents and shorebreak. Families pick specific swimmable beaches (Medano, Chileno, Santa Maria) or resorts with serious pool programs. Cabo runs pricier than Cancun on average and skews slightly older and quieter, which some families count as a feature.
The quick sort
- First Mexico trip, or kids who live in the water: Riviera Maya.
- Tightest budget with the biggest resort selection: Cancun.
- West coast family avoiding a cross country flight: Cabo, chosen for a swimmable beach or a great pool.
- A family allergic to resort bubbles: consider Puerto Vallarta, the sleeper pick: swimmable Pacific bay, an actual walkable Mexican town, and prices below both headliners.
The bottom line
Riviera Maya for water and wonder, Cabo for western convenience and drama, Cancun for value at volume. All three run excellent family resorts; the coasts, not the hotels, are the real decision.
